Feeling alone in your primary relationship is extremely painful. The majority of couples seeking counselling do so because they feel a sense of isolation and desperation in their partnership. I see couples at all stages of their relationship and can work with you on various issues, including:
- Pre-marital support
- Unresolved arguments/ongoing conflict
- Lack of intimacy
- Life transitions
- Repairing after a breach of trust/infidelity
In the first session, we will meet together in order to get a sense of what is keeping you stuck in distress. Then, I will meet with each partner separately for one individual session. After the initial assessment phase is complete, we will meet together for the remainder of the therapy.
I have additional clinical training in what is called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). This counselling process is one where we will work collaboratively to slow things down so you can see the repetitive negative cycle that repeats from fight to fight. We will explore together how reactive emotions take over while also discovering the softer unexpressed emotions and needs. We then begin to change the conversation of your relationship to build deeper connection and bonding between you and your partner.
EFT has extensive evidence backing its effectiveness. Most couples who engage fully in the process find lasting improvement in their relationship, even years after therapy ends.
